BREAKING NEWS | UCCS student dies following a medical emergency

UCCS nursing student Mia Brown died the night of Feb. 12 following a medical emergency at the rec center.

After getting permission from Brown’s family, Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet announced in a campus-wide email that more information will be available in the coming days.

“She was a dedicated nursing student who was highly involved on campus, and she will be very missed,” Sobanet said.

Sobanet also acknowledged the students and staff at the rec center who responded in the moment.

“I wanted to take a moment to thank all of the students and staff at the Recreation Center who stepped in to help as the situation quickly unfolded. Thank you for demonstrating what it truly means to be a part of the Mountain Lion community,” she said.

The email directs students to the Wellness Center’s crisis walk-in, which is open Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., and the 24/7 TELUS Health service.

It also provides the Real Help Hotline at (833) 533-CHAT (2428) for faculty and staff needing support during this time. They can also visit the website for more information.

This story is developing and will be updated as more details become available.
