Heller Center hosts ‘Death Becomes Her’ at free outdoor movie night

As a lover of old, campy horror movies and anything starring Meryl Streep, I can’t wait for the Heller Center’s upcoming Scary Good Outdoor Movie Night.

On Oct. 11 at 7 p.m., the Heller Center will host an outdoor screening of 1992 cult classic “Death Becomes Her.” The event is free and open to everyone. The Heller Center asks movie-goers to bring their own blankets and chairs, but snacks will be provided.

The black comedy features Streep as Madeline Ashton and Goldie Hawn as Helen Sharp in a high-stakes plot to secure eternal life. No length is too far and no mountain too steep for these women as they search for a miracle drug.

Assistant Director and Curator Rhonda Goodman-Gaghan wants attendees to enjoy the space. “The Heller Center for Arts & Humanities has two Pueblo Revival historic structures and 34 acres of open space with gorgeous views of Pikes Peak and Eagle Rock during the day, and at night, the atmosphere is calm and soothing,” she said. “Our goal is [encouraging] past guests to come out and entice newcomers as well.”

“As much as we promote the intellectual and creative endeavors of faculty and students at UCCS, we think having fun is an important part of the college experience. ‘Death Becomes Her’ is a fantastic movie. There’s plenty of space for everyone, and we have great snacks, too!” Goodman-Gaghan said.

Goodman-Gaghan hopes to entice a new audience who wouldn’t come to the typical events at the Heller Center. “The Heller Center has compelling lectures, exhibitions, outdoor theatre productions and a host of other programs,” she said.
