Sports Spotlight: Maison White discusses women’s basketball’s goals and successes

Only one player in the RMAC is shooting over 60% from the field on less than 200 shots over the last 18 games: Mountain Lions junior forward Maison White.

White has been one of the biggest contributors to UCCS women’s basketball’s winning record, averaging a team-high 13.9 points per game so far this season. White’s place on the RMAC all-academic first team at the end of the 2022-2023 season reflects her success on and off the court.

White has had to adjust to new head coach Misty Wilson, who has led the team to a 13-7 record as of Jan. 30, an improvement over last year’s midseason mark.

White likes to thoroughly plan out and schedule everything to help her balance academics and athletics during the competitive season. She thinks her academic load stays consistent throughout the academic year.

“My combination of in-person and hybrid classes allows my workload to be equal throughout the whole year,” she said.

However, White’s priority is the success of the team. Rather than setting concrete goals, White takes it game-by-game, focusing on the next challenge her team has ahead of them.

“I want to be the best player I can be, but I think right now I am just focused on what we can do together,” she said.

With this team-oriented mindset, White hopes that she can help the program achieve their ambitious goals for the 2023-2024 season.

“We have very high goals this year … to make the playoffs and then make the tournament. That is our main goal. Of course, who doesn’t want to win the whole thing, but I think that step-by-step is the best way forward,” she said.

White believes that the team’s strengthened bond can be attributed to the Mountain Lions’ new coaching staff and that Wilson has been a beneficial addition to the team.

“She is building a great culture for this program … and [Wilson and her coaching staff] are basically family now,” White said.

The Mountain Lions will take on New Mexico Highlands on Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. Students can find more information on the locations and times for future games on the women’s basketball schedule.
