The Study Break: “The Bride!”

If you were wondering whether you should focus on midterms or go see “The Bride!” with Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, I’d recommend taking out your textbooks.

In an alternate 1930s Chicago, Frankenstein (Bale) approaches Dr. Euphronius (Annette Bening) and asks her to create him a companion. A murdered woman dug up from her grave and brought back from death; the bride (Buckley) struggles to remember her past and how she came to be.

This film is working with too many genres to consider. I’d label it a sci-fi, drama and comedy.

The twist and new perspective on the original story kept the same sci-fi feel, but the plotline was too vague for me to feel the drama. I wasn’t laughing with the movie’s jokes as much as I was laughing out of confusion about what was going on.

Writer and director Maggie Gyllenhaal produced a film that was too experimental, specifically with the dialogue. Buckley was given such an odd script that her delivery felt cringe-worthy.

Too many storylines were going along for me to really connect with any of the characters or care about what was going on. It seemed like Gyllenhaal wanted to touch on too many themes, which left me lost on what the main message of the film was supposed to be.

The cinematography looked good while the pacing was solid and never felt slow, but at the end of the day, the randomness of it all left me wanting the movie to be finished. Go study for that midterm exam instead.

The Bride released to theaters March 6. Picture by Screen Rant.
