The movie “Reminders of Him” only reminded me of how gross Colleen Hoover’s writing is, and how much better of a time I’d be having if I was doing homework instead.
After getting out of prison, Kenna (Maika Monroe) tries to get her life back together and reconnect with her daughter. Because of her jaded past, the world is against her. Kenna and her dead ex’s best friend, Ledger (Tyriq Withers), inevitably fall in love, but their love is forbidden and prevents Kenna from seeing her daughter.
Vanessa Conwell has hidden a very disturbing dynamic with solid directing. From the beginning, you don’t think this movie will be bad because of how it looks, but then the dialogue starts.
As I was watching, I could tell this movie was trying to recreate a novel from its clunky dialogue sequences. The script was plain and corny, and some lines put in the film could only work on the page.
I felt the drama of this drama/romance to be a little compelling, but the romance portion is completely immoral. This is what put Hoover on the map, starting with her depiction of a toxic love story in “It Ends With Us.”
Hoover creates the worst dynamic possible and somehow gives the couple a happy ending, even though they shouldn’t be together.
To avoid cringe-worthy lines and a boring movie in general, get back to the books! Textbooks, not Hoover’s.
