The UCCS Anime Club strives to provide a community where students can come together and talk about their favorite shows in a safe environment. Whether you are new to the genre or an experienced watcher, this club accepts everyone with open arms.
Film major Jessie Thompson discovered the Anime Club his freshmen year at UCCS. The sense of community and the joyous social environment became intoxicating, and inevitably he became the president of the club.
With the stereotypes associated with watching anime, Thompson emphasized that the club wants to achieve a more accepting environment. “Our goal is to build a community where we can help everyone out.”
Since the club’s founding in 2019, the numbers have only grown stronger as the popularization of anime in western culture increases.
The meetings consist of multiple activities. The club typically watches the first 30 minutes of an episode before playing trivia. Depending on how the night goes, the club will continue watching more episodes of the show.
Some nights they decide to watch films. For example, the last film they watched together was “The Wind Rises,” a Studio Ghibli movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
The meetings don’t just stay on campus. Last semester, members of the group went to the anime convention held in downtown Colorado Springs. During the semester, the club will meet for sushi when they can.
Meetings are held every other Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Their next meeting will be held on April 16. For more information, you can check out Mountain Lion Connect or contact [email protected].
