Luke Combs released his first album since 2024, and it was a bit of a rollercoaster. Take that notebook and put it back in your bag, but don’t zip it up all the way.
“The Way I Am” is a solid album from start to finish, but Combs’ lack of a consistent narrative left a bit to be desired. His variety of rhythms and emotions give the audience songs for every mood; however, I could never truly grasp the story he was trying to tell.
Combs uses the front half of his project to experiment with other genres (mostly pop and R&B) but keeps an underlying tone of traditional country through all 22 songs.
If you’re looking for a track with some of that R&B inspiration, “Soon As I Get Home” offers a radio-worthy listen that blends Combs classic roar with a catchy chorus. It’s one that fits the “driving with the windows down” vibe so well.
If traditional country is more your thing, “Ever Mine — feat. Allison Krauss” and “Be By You” are my two favorite songs on the album. Both are slower love songs built around a heavy dose of acoustic guitar and strong vocals that capture the feel of a summer sunset.
“Rich Man” and “Tell ‘Em About Tonight” are more upbeat but still offer that traditional country vibe you might be looking for.
Overall, I would give this album 3.5 out of 5 stars. If you like Combs’ current discography, you’re going to like this album. If you’re not a fan, I’d recommend checking your Canvas for any upcoming assignments.
