The Study Break: “Forbidden Fruits”

“Forbidden Fruits” should have been forbidden to play in theaters. Kick off the last stretch of the semester by actually attending your classes instead of seeing this film.

It may be attractive that big names such as Lili Reinhart, Victoria Pedretti, Lola Tung, Alexandra Shipp and Emma Chamberlain appear in the film. However, once you’ve seen their performances, you’ll likely change your mind.

In the mall, Apple (Reinhart) works at Free Eden alongside her “fruits” Cherry (Pedretti) and Fig (Shipp). When Pumpkin (Tung) joins the clique and gets hired, she begins to question the cultish sisterhood as everyone’s inner darkness begins to show.

The narrative by Lily Houghton and director Meredith Alloway wasn’t horrible, but then the script came along. This film is labeled as a comedy/horror, but the jokes were too corny. When the jokes did land, they were exhale-out-the-nose worthy at best. The horror was nonexistent and replaced instead with over-the-top gore. It should have been labelled as a thriller.

For a film that is only 1 hour, 40 minutes long, it felt like it was stretching to reach the plot that drove the narrative forward.

It was fun to see critiques on big brands such as Free People; however, it felt more like a cliche than a meaningful commentary.

After watching “Forbidden Fruits,” I think it’s time to face the fact that we’re back from spring break. Go to class, better movies will be out soon.
