The Study Break: “Lee Cronin’s The Mummy”

Ever felt trapped sitting in a three-hour lecture? Well, imagine being locked inside of a tomb for eight years.

When Katie, (Natalie Grace) the daughter of a journalist, Charlie (Jack Reynor), is kidnapped, the parents are shocked to hear the news that she’s been found eight years later…alive. However, once Katie is brought back into the family’s home, it becomes clear that something is off.

“Lee Cronin’s The Mummy” is not as bad as people are saying. Yes, there are some really corny lines and moments that miss the mark on scary, however, the story is — for the first time in forever — actually interesting.

The performances from the parents, Reynor and Laia Costa, are genuinely good for a modern horror film.

If you can ignore a couple mishaps in the script, the detective narrative that hops between New Mexico and Egypt is pretty engaging.

The Mummy herself wasn’t creepy looking, but the gore of the scenes she produced made up for it. I was constantly wriggling in my seat in disgust throughout the whole thing.

If you’re a hardcore horror fan, I wouldn’t recommend watching this film. If you’re looking for a campy escape, and you’re done with your homework, you might enjoy “Lee Cronin’s The Mummy.”
