Sports fandoms take no days off. When we are not watching sports or arguing about sports with each other, we still like to represent our teams when out and about.
There are a lot of ways to represent your team. Hat companies like New Era provide caps for your team in all sorts of colors, hockey sweaters can keep you warm while looking stylish and basketball jerseys are classics at parties and concerts.
With so many ways to show off your team, what are our preferred outfits for the sports catwalk?
Adan – Graphic tees and baseball jerseys
I have always been a sucker for a good graphic tee. To me, it is the perfect bridge between a regular t-shirt with the team’s name on it and a jersey.
A basic shirt that features the team’s name and logo feels too plain. It feels like a work uniform, which is fitting because if you pay attention to the staff when watching games, that’s usually what they are wearing.
A jersey on the other hand feels too flamboyant. If that is your style, then go right ahead, but I don’t like standing out when I am out getting groceries.
A graphic t-shirt is that perfect medium, as the shirt has personality without going too far. I especially like shirts featuring the stars of a team or cultural features of the city they represent.
I wish the Colorado Rockies would have kept their old City Connect uniforms as shirts featuring the “license plate” font and the mountains were so fitting for Colorado and I loved the shirts that came with it.
Speaking of the Rockies, baseball jerseys have been growing on me recently. Despite what I said about jerseys being too flamboyant, baseball jerseys are the exception as they can be a great complimentary piece for outfits this summer.
They feel like the flannel shirts of the summer as throwing an unbuttoned jersey over an outfit just matches the summer vibes so well for some reason just like how flannels match the fall vibe.
Ty – Hockey Jerseys
I know that Adan just got done saying that it is too flamboyant, but I think hockey jerseys are far and away the coolest piece of sporting clothing that you can wear on a day-to-day basis.
I don’t know a ton about fashion, but what I do know is that the oversized and baggy look from the late 1990s-early 2000s is back in style, so what better way to do that than with a hockey jersey that naturally fits bigger than your average jersey.
Their heavier fabric makes it better for layering, and I think for this purpose it functions and styles better than any other sporting item.
I also think that the designs on hockey jerseys differ so much from other sports that have a very simple design which makes them elite. Teams in the NHL lean into heavily bold logos, fun colors, and unique blocking which makes them look really cool.
I mean think about our home team right here in Denver, CO – they have a huge crest in the middle of their jersey and mix colors like burgundy, blue, and grey to make a beautiful home jersey.
There is a reason why Snoop Dogg dawned the sweet black and yellow Pittsburgh Penguins uniform for the music video of his hit song “Gin and Juice” and that’s because when you see people wearing hockey jerseys on the street, you think they just look cooler.
When the D O double G makes a fashion choice, how could I ever say that something is better.
Tanner – Baseball Caps
I wanted to pick something more niche, but the fact that I wear baseball caps more than any other piece of sports apparel means it has to be my choice.
My favorite thing about baseball caps is how versatile they are. Not only do they save you from the inevitable bad hair day, but you can also find hats that match just about any outfit.
If you prefer a more subtle look, there are all-black caps designed to blend seamlessly with darker styles. On the flip side, you could also find the craziest blend of neon green and bright pink if pronounced colors are more your thing.
I know we’re all sports fans here, but another thing that makes baseball caps so great is how they appeal to non-sports fans just as much as diehard supporters.
There’s an entire community of people who collect fitted caps not because they follow baseball, but simply because of how stylish and iconic they are. That alone speaks volumes about the influence baseball caps have had on fashion and culture.
Overall, baseball caps are more than just sports apparel – they’re a staple of everyday fashion with a real cultural influence. They’ve stood the test of time as a versatile accessory that continues to remain relevant and shows no signs of fading away any time soon.
