Colorado Springs’ resident wonder from down under celebrated his fifth birthday with party hats, spinach and over 100 of his closest friends. Dennis the Emu has been a staple of the Springs scene since 2021. On April 4, the Springs showed up to support their favorite feathered friend.
Dennis’s birthday party took place in Acacia Park from noon to 2 p.m. The event drew a crowd of onlookers and included character performers such as Batman, Superman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn and Jack Skellington. Multiple food trucks serviced the event, including the Josh & John’s mobile ice cream truck.
Dennis was raised by his handler, Billie-Sue Mitchell, to protect livestock from predators. According to KOAA 5, Mitchell realized how social Dennis was on their hikes, and how positive he could be for the community. According to Mitchell, their mission is to spread joy and happiness.
Dennis can usually be found on notable trails in the Springs area, including at the Garden of the Gods and in Old Colorado City, walking with the other hikers. Dennis can be requested for educational appearances at schools and libraries. He and his handler give lessons on local history, animal welfare, and aviation biology and habitats according to their website.
When he’s not partying, Dennis is also a flightless philanthropist. Local charities and awareness campaigns can partner with Dennis to increase community engagement.
Mitchell and other attendees expressed their surprise at the community turnout for the event. “The most surprising thing is how many people came out in support of our most famous fowl here in Colorado, but who can blame them? Dennis is a legend around here,” Batman said.
The event was organized by Mitchell with the help of the city. Mitchell said that while Dennis regularly volunteers for photo-ops and educational sessions, the party was his first public event.
Partygoers had the option to make fanart and cards for Dennis at a craft table. Community members gathered for a group photo and had the chance to sign a personalized birthday card for the emu himself.
