Many freshman students come to college believing that they’re more than capable of taking care of themselves and that they will be able to cope with anything life throws at them, but two weeks into the semester many of them find that this isn’t the case.
This leaves a large majority of these students trying to get help and build a support system.
Luckily for most of them, they don’t have to search further than their dorm.
Dormitories can provide students with a sense of comfort and security; UCCS freshman students should be required to live on campus.
In further detail, Kent State University reports that living in dorms helps students “develop life-long friendships,” and gives them the ability to thrive due to their environment that fosters educational and personal growth.
Freshman dormitories can also help individuals immerse themselves in student life.
According to an article titled “Should you live on campus at college? All signs point to yes, at least during your freshman year,” written by Chelsey Grasso for Bustle, “One of the greatest things about going to college is being able to feel a part of a community of your peers. If you live off-campus, you’re isolating yourself from the active and vibrant student life at your school. Whether it’s an on-campus protest, the school’s television channel, or a student life club that meets in the residence halls, you don’t want to miss out on the action.”
I personally believe that if I hadn’t stayed in the dorms my freshman year that my life would be much different. I wouldn’t have made the friends I have, I wouldn’t have experienced a lot of the things I was able to experience, I wouldn’t have the memories I love and I wouldn’t be working where I am.
Requiring freshman students to live on campus provides them with a support system and gives them the opportunity to create memories that will last a lifetime.
