The trees and flowers are springing to life this April, and so are our campus sororities.
At UCCS, there are two sororities in the National Panhellenic Council (NPC): Phi Sigma Sigma and Pi Beta Phi. The UCCS Panhellenic Council serves as the bridge between sorority chapters and the broader UCCS community.
“We work to support and connect both chapters and their members, promote academic excellence, community engagement, and provide a space for women to grow and lead together,” said NPC member Morgan Kuhn.
These sororities teamed up with Reach Out and Read Colorado to launch a book drive and support them through a variety of upcoming events. Reach Out and Read will receive all proceeds from their upcoming Philanthropy Week.
Reach Out and Read provide medical clinics statewide with new and gently used books, which medical doctors then “prescribe” to patients, usually children up to age 5. Doctors at certain medical clinics are trained in the Reach Out and Read model to emphasize the importance of literacy and reading to the child and their family.
Reach Out and Read Colorado has provided more than 330,000 new books each year to all 64 counties in Colorado. The books are distributed in 30 languages across 334 pediatric clinics. They have more than 2,000 medical providers trained in the read-out and read model.
Of the children Reach Out and Read serves, 68% are from low-income families and 28% of the families served are non-English speaking.
To support their collaboration with Reach Out and Read, the UCCS NPC is hosting 3 Philanthropy-related events from April 20-22.
On Monday, April 20, the Panhellenic is hosting Fuel the Future, where they will be tabling for Reach Out and Read and selling energy drinks. The location for this event is still being determined.
On April 21, they will host Blind Date with a Book, where students can purchase a mystery book. The event location is still being determined.
Finally, on April 22, they will host the Dunk a Greek event on the Summit Turf. Students will be given an opportunity to dunk their fellow Greek Life classmates in a dunk tank.
