Historical Photo of the Week: ‘The Dorm’

In the 1985 fall semester, UCCS held a competition to name the cafeteria in the Student Center, which would later transform into the University Center. “The Dorm” won “because it was the only place you could sleep on campus.” This was a fun jab from the students, given that on-campus housing wouldn’t be built until over a decade later in 1996.

The name stood as a testament to UCCS students’ sense of humor and perseverance with limited resources and facilities. “The Dorm” was more than a place to eat — it was a safe haven for students to hang out, get work done and, of course, sleep. Today, the spirit of “The Dorm” lives on in Cafe 65 where students still eat, socialize, sleep and work daily.
