SGA passes emergency food bill in response to government shutdown

SGA passed a government shutdown food assistance bill and introduced the TriO Student Support Services program at the Senate meeting on Oct. 30.

The Government Shutdown Food Assistance bill

SGA unanimously passed The Government Shutdown Food Assistance bill (SB-06) to fund food items for students throughout the month of November in light of the recent government shutdown.

The bill totals $3,181.55 to provide additional funds for Clyde’s Cupboard, Grab-n-Go bags and Fresh Food Fridays.

According to SGA Vice President Isabella Polombo, $1,000 will be given to both Clyde’s Cupboard and Grab-n-Go, and Fresh Food Fridays will receive $1,181.55.

This money is in addition to a $6,000 donation from the CU foundation’s “rainy day funds,” according to Amanda Allee, the assistant vice chancellor of student support and engagement.

Students do not have to show proof of need to receive food.

TriO Student Support Services program (SSS)

Representing Department Chair of Leadership, Research, and Foundations Patricia Witkowsky, Allee introduced the TriO student support program, a program to distribute a federal grant for first-generation, low income and disabled students. The grant provides money for educational opportunities, while not being directly a scholarship.

The program is open to 140 students on campus. Applications will be open until Dec. 3. Students can apply using this form. UCCS is in the process of hiring a director for the program.

Other bills

SGA unanimously passed a bill for Friendsgiving totaling $12,041.82. The bill covers bingo prizes, merchandise and catering for the event.

Friendsgiving is on Nov. 19 from 6-10 p.m.

A bill totaling $4,142.89 was unanimously passed for Light the Spine, an annual event that gives club members an opportunity to showcase their clubs by decorating a board that will be placed on either side of the spine.

The bill covers the cost of the boards, cash prizes for participating clubs and hot chocolate.
