The Study Break: Crime 101

Welcome back to The Study Break. If you’re looking to add to the adrenaline of turning in your assignment in seconds before it’s due, go watch “Crime 101.”

Directed by Bart Layton, “Crime 101” is a classic cops versus robbers story. However, what sets the film apart is its ability to continually flip this dynamic throughout the film. Mike Davis (Chris Hemsworth) is a thief trying to achieve his last scandal with detective Lou Lubesnick (Mark Ruffalo) hot on his trail.

The story is labeled as a crime/drama/thriller. If you are looking for pure action, then this movie is not for you. It has a character driven plot, but the suspenseful score makes up for the missing action sequences.

Alongside Hemsworth and Ruffalo were Barry Keoghan, Halle Berry and Monica Barbaro. While the cast certainly didn’t give their best performances, the acting was solid.

Despite its long runtime of two hours and 20 minutes, this film was well paced, and I never felt a dull moment. Accompanied by a solid script, this linear style form of storytelling was easy to follow, and I never got lost.

This film is worth missing your class readings for this week.
