UCCS dining update: cafe closures, product changes and open positions

UCCS’ Dining and Hospitality Services has begun the spring semester by closing cafes, introducing new products and continuing to search for student employees.

According to an email sent out by Dining and Hospitality Services, the Hybl Cafe, Dwire Coffee and Columbine Coffee will be offline until staffing levels increase. Pinney’s Cafe will only operate during events.

Larry Lee, the executive director of auxiliary services, says that with these closures comes many new changes to the on-campus cafes and dining halls.

“While we have challenges with the hospitality on campus right now, we’re focusing where we can in evolving the program to increase satisfaction for our students,” he said.

Students will see these changes happen throughout the semester. According to Lee, Sanatorium Grounds began serving Loyal Coffee products as part of a hyperlocal partnership with the local coffee brand on January 17. The dining halls and catering will also serve Loyal Coffee products going forward.

Clyde’s Gastropub introduced several new items to their menu on January 17 as well, including items like a meatloaf sandwich and onion rings. Cafe 65 will begin offering new menu items and a new station in February.

Lee says that these changes are happening after Dining and Hospitality Services lost a large portion of their professional and student staff over the winter break. They are hiring new student staff members through SEANS.

According to Lee, those interested in applying for open positions need to have a passion for serving and interacting with their peers. Lee says that employees should have a “hospitality spirit” and can expect to work retail, serve food prepared by chefs and clean up in the kitchens. They are offered one free meal per shift and a flexible work schedule.
