Women’s basketball clenches nail-biter against Fort Lewis College, 74-71

A late rally full of 2-point plays from the Mountain Lions helped them secure a win over Fort Lewis. The win puts UCCS at 10-7 overall record and a 6-4 record in the RMAC.

UCCS started off the game strong with a layup from guard Amyah Moore Allen. The Mountain Lions kept up the pace and took a lead of 7-0 in the first period. UCCS barely clung on to the lead as the Skyhawks’ Katie Lamb hit 3-pointer after 3-pointer. The first quarter ended with UCCS having a slim lead, 20-18.

The second quarter was a constant back and forth, but fouls from the Skyhawks gave the Mountain Lions the opportunity to keep the score even with free throws. Once again, Lamb stood out in this quarter, scoring 11 out of the 26 points Fort Lewis put up during the second. Missed shots from the Mountain Lions allowed the Skyhawks to take the lead, ending the first half 44-40.

The Skyhawks extended their lead in the beginning of the third, 48-42, but the momentum tipped back into UCCS’ favor when they regained the lead by a point, 52-51. The 1-point lead wasn’t enough to hold off the Skyhawks who had the advantage going into the final quarter, 60-53.

The Mountain Lions found their footing in the fourth quarter led by Moore Allen’s two free throws. Guard Emily Vidal made a 3-pointer with 8:13 to go and was right back on the scoresheet with a layup to cut the Skyhawks’ lead to just three, 63-60.

More gritty 2-point plays helped the Mountain Lions regain the lead. With 3:08 to go, a layup by guard Maison White put the score at 66-65. Three successful free throws in the final minute from guard Breelyn Robinson sealed the Mountain Lion victory, 74-71.

White led in scoring for the Mountain Lions with a total of 21 points scored. She made 17 rebounds and all but one of her eight free throw attempts. Moore Allen was the next big point-contributor with 17 points against the Skyhawks.

The Mountain Lions play next at the Gallogly Events Center on Jan. 30 against Western Colorado University.
