Women’s soccer wins last regular season match, advances to RMAC quarterfinals

UCCS women’s soccer ended their regular season on a high note, defeating CSU Pueblo 5-1. The win landed them in the RMAC Championship Tournament as the fourth seed. 

Despite the match being rescheduled twice due to inclement weather on Nov. 6, the field was cleared in time for the game’s kickoff.  

UCCS got on the scoreboard with a goal from freshman forward Abbey Stassi in the 22nd minute, assisted by graduate student forward Amelia McManus. Just nine minutes later, freshman defender Malia Groshong scored her first goal of her collegiate career with an assist from senior midfielder Fie Steenberg, bringing the score up 2-0.  

The Mountain Lions ended the first half with two goals and seven shots. 

Five minutes into the second half, junior midfielder Emily Aguilar scored the team’s third goal with an assist from freshman defender Elise Broberg.  

UCCS had several shots on goal before scoring the fourth goal in the 64th minute by sophomore midfielder Taylynn Levi off an assist by sophomore midfielder Luka Johnson.  

CSU Pueblo scored in the 71st minute to bring the score to 4-1, but the Mountain Lions regained momentum as Levi scored the team’s fifth and final goal in the 84th minute. 

The Mountain Lions ended the regular season with four straight wins, which is their longest win streak of the season. Their overall record is 9-7-2 (7-5-0 for conference games).  

They will face fifth seed Colorado Christian University at Mountain Lion Stadium Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2:30 p.m. for the quarterfinals of the RMAC Championship Tournament.
