SGA election campaigning begins

SGA candidate applications were due on Feb. 16, and elections will take place from March 9-13.

All students, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral, are eligible to apply and qualify if they have maintained a 2.0 or above GPA. There are 24 positions to fill including the executive branch and 21 senators.

The mandatory Candidate & Referendum Meeting was held on Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. in University Center room 302. Expectations vary by position, but all Executive and Legislative branch members are required to submit monthly reports to the members’ branch leader, serve on at least one University committee and one SGA committee, attend all assigned meetings and host two office hours per week.

Exact requirements by position are listed in the application on Mountain Lion Connect.

SGA members serve as representatives for the student body by creating and voting on initiatives. Students can approach members with issues, and members are responsible for presenting those issues at SGA meetings.

“Our university in specific is on the smaller side, which makes our Senate and Executive positions more connected and immediately attached to initiatives and ideas brought forth by non-SGA students,” Moheit said.

According to Moheit, SGA members have many opportunities for professional growth, such as meetings with the Chancellor and CU system employees and trips to the Denver Capitol.

“After a Resolution written by Isabella, current SGA VP, and me, we were interviewed by a Washington D.C. Journalist and made those lasting connections. Needless to say, the networking is never-ending and extremely fruitful,” Moheit said.

Terms last for a year and every position is re-elected each year.

The SGA office, located in the University Center, is open for students trying to decide if they want to run. Current Senators and Executives who are re-running cannot discuss the election process but departing members can.

Interested SGA applicants who were unable to attend or students with questions can contact the Election Commissioner, Catalina Moheit, at [email protected] to schedule a makeup candidate meeting.
