The Study Break: How to Make a Killing

If you’re looking for a study break, then you’re in luck. Glen Powell’s debut as a leading role in an A24 film released on Feb. 20. It’s safe to say this film will make a killing distracting you from doing homework.

Sitting in a cell with only hours until his execution, Becket Redfellow (Powell) explains his “tragedy” to a priest. A man seeking a handsome inheritance with no hesitation of getting rid of the competition.

Writer and director John Patton Ford produced a great-looking film while saving Powell from another type-cast role.

As a comedy/thriller, this film does everything it wished to accomplish in the genre. Its jokes land and the suspense is attention grabbing.

The narration of Powell’s character gave the film a linear structure which was easy to grasp, but not so self-explanatory that the narrative felt mind numbing. Though you’re given the answer to what happens to Becket Redfellow from the beginning, you can’t help but root for the guy and wish for a different ending.

Helped along by a solid storyline, Powell, Margaret Qualley and Jessica Henwick performed well enough for this story to be believable.

Instead of attending your business class, this film may teach you how to actually make a killing.
