SGA voted to change term durations and help host Clyde-Con

On Feb. 19, SGA voted to move the term duration to April 1 and help host and fund Clyde-Con at the Feb. 19 Senate meeting.

Senate term duration amendment

This amendment would move the start term date from June 1 to April 1 and grant new senators organizational power to allow time for training — like practice senate meetings — and oath signing before the year ends. However, legislative law-making power is retained by the current Senate until the 2027-28 fiscal year.

Moving the term start date will also allow the newly elected Senate to establish leadership roles, like speaker of the Senate and speaker pro tempore, before the school year begins.

“It’s basically just opening up more time for [the Senate] to do all those bookkeeping type tasks, get them done early, so that way [the Senate] can fire into the semester and be running on all cylinders,” the Speaker of the Senate, Walat Gozeh, said.

The amendment was unanimously approved but will not go into effect until the spring 2027 election cycle.

Clyde-Con

Clyde-Con, an annual sustainability event hosted by Clyde Clothing Corner for students to swap clothes, will be held on April 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Upper Lodge.

SGA Vice President and co-founder of Clyde’s Clothing Corner Isabella Polombo requested that the Senate form an ad hoc committee to collaborate and help fund the event, which the Senate unanimously voted to do.

“On average, we have 300 to 400 people attend this event, so it is one of the highest attended events for SGA,” Polombo said.

The event will feature clubs, activities and free food.
