Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and we all know what that means! We need to spend money. As love is flying through the air this season, every student is looking to their wallets to figure out if they have enough to do something or to get something. If you don’t have a significant other to spend the day with, then maybe you can celebrate with your closest friends or even by yourself. Valentine’s Day does not have to be a day where we spend an absurd amount of money; a lot of times your person just wants to see that you remembered and did something to show them how much you care about them. So let’s get right into it, shall we?
1. Gifts:
If you don’t have time to do anything on this day then get him or her a gift of some sort. These gifts can include things like a teddy bear, a box of chocolate, flowers and even a card. All of these things are great to get somebody and are perfect for any gender. If you are really tight on cash and a Valentine’s Day bear, themed box of chocolate or even a themed card will be too much, then there are many ways around it. For the bear, if you can buy one that is small and cute, instead of a gigantic one. When looking for chocolate, maybe don’t get the heart-shaped box, but a bag of Lindor truffles, or maybe just a few pieces of their favorite chocolate. And when it comes to the card, fold a piece of white paper and decorate something yourself.
2. Movies:
Let’s say you just want to spend a nice evening with your man or woman at the movies, but you don’t want to spend all of your cash on popcorn, candy and a movie ticket. You have a few options. When it comes to the candy, go to the Dollar Tree, Target or Walmart, or any place that sells your favorites for cheap. While you are there, make sure to grab a thing of poppable movie theater popcorn to throw into your microwave when you get home. You can even grab a soda or tea if you really want to. All of that together won’t cost more than maybe ten dollars depending on how much of it you buy. Now when it comes to the movie, you can stop at your nearest Redbox and pick something up that you have been wanting to see for only $1.99 (make sure to return it in 24 hours so you don’t get any extra charges). You can also find a movie on Netflix, HBO, Hulu or Amazon Prime Video.
3. Outdoors:
Maybe you and your significant other are more of an outdoorsy kind of people. If that is the case you can do things like hike a mountain, or just a normal trail that you enjoy. You can walk around Manitou or Downtown Colorado Springs and just enjoy each other’s company. Another fun thing to do would be the Manitou Incline. And lastly, you could go somewhere with a bit more snow and go sledding, or build a snowman or even have some hot chocolate and enjoy the views with each other. There are a lot of neat things to go and do outside especially when it comes to all that the Springs has to offer.
4. Dinner:
A five star, five-course, black tie restaurant might be a little too much for your wallet to handle, but that is okay because those places are overrated anyway. To have a nice dinner with your girl or guy, you could create a five-course restaurant at your own home. Buy what some of their favorite foods are, maybe it is lasagna, spaghetti, steak, chicken or even a sandwich; go to the store and pick up the ingredients (find the cheapest options) and come home to make it together as a couple. This way you two get a chance to be together in a more intimate setting than having someone constantly ask you for your drink refill. If you two are not into cooking, then you can always order pizza or other types of fast food and when you bring it home, unwrap it put it on a plate, light a candle or two, put the drinks in a wine glass or any kind of “fancy” glass you may have and there you have it, a fancy five-star restaurant in your own home.
Valentine’s Day is all about letting the person you are in a relationship know that you care about them. You do not have to get them expensive and fancy things, you don’t even have to take them to high-end places. All they should really want from you is for you to show them that they mean so much to you. So even if your budget is really tight and you truly can’t even do any of the things listed above, then shower them with compliments and let them know how special they are to you. Love is in the air folks, have a great Valentine’s Day.
