The nine-member University of Colorado Board of Regents, who supervise the system and control the disbursement of funds, accept nominations for and dispense Honorary Degrees, University Medals and Distinguished Service Awards each year. The nomination deadline is Sept. 15.

Each campus chancellor designates a committee to encourage and submit nominations which must include a letter of nomination, recommendation letters and a CV according to the CU system website.

Nominations remain confidential, however members of the Colorado Springs and UCCS community have attained recognition from the board in previous years.

The 2018 awards recognized Jay Cimino, president and CEO of the Phil Long Family of Dealerships with the Distinguished Service Award based on contributions that benefit the state. In the same year, Mary Osborne from UCCS received a University Medal because of contributions made by her and her husband to UCCS since 1997.

UCCS has previously seen six professors be recognized as Distinguished Professors.

According to Jared Verner, director of University Communication and Media Relations, Communique will announce the honorees when they are announced at the end of the selection process.
