Lacrosse loses snowy final game of the regular season to Regis University, 14-6

Lacrosse lost to Regis in a game that ended early due to snow on April 14, 14-6.

The game was ended by officials with just under three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter due to worsening visibility. “The weather was not going for us, but we stuck with it,” senior midfielder Erica Rivera said.

The first quarter looked bright for UCCS as sophomore attacker Sarah Urbanic scored the first goal of the game in the first two minutes. The Rangers stole the momentum by scoring 4 goals with 8 minutes left in the quarter.

Urbanic swung the ball to junior attacker Allie Schell who scored to make the score 4-2. Finishing out the quarter were 3 more goals from the Rangers and a single goal from sophomore attacker Emma Grace Martin to end the first 7-3.

Rangers kept the momentum in the second as they took the first 3 goals of the quarter. Junior midfielder Peyton Ross sent a lob over to junior attacker Sydnee Anne-Moeller who finished to make the score 10-4. With 5 minutes left in the second, the Rangers had the last laugh with another goal to finish the quarter 11-4.

Four scoreless minutes started the third quarter. Graduate midfielder Rylie Maready passed to Urbanic who scored to make the match 11-5. Regis found their way through the UCCS defensive wall with 4 minutes to go to make the score 12-5. With 20 seconds left in the quarter, the Rangers put another in the back of the net, ending the quarter 13-5.

The snow got heavier and thicker in the fourth sticking to the turf and impacting visibility. There was no scoring in the first 10 minutes, but Regis scored their last goal with 5 minutes to go. Urbanic obtained a hat trick with 3 minutes left in the quarter, but the whistle was blown, and the game ended due to poor visibility.

Regis took the win 14-6. The Mountain Lions are 0-14 against the Rangers. UCCS ended their regular season record 9-5 and a 6-4 record in the RMAC.

Rivera shared her thoughts on what it was like playing her last home game for the Mountain Lions. “It’s crazy. These four years have gone by so fast, but it has been the best time of my life,” she said.

Even with the loss, Rivera was confident in the team’s mindset going into the tournament. “Win it all. We have nothing to lose.”

The No. 3 seed Mountain Lions will face No. 2 seed Regis once again on April 25 in the RMAC tournament semifinals. The game can be watched on the RMAC Network for a fee.
