With many notable athletes being honored for RMAC and seasonal accomplishments, The Scribe compiled an update of what spring sports are accomplishing this season.
Women’s Track and Field
After finishing sixth in the RMAC, freshman high jumper Danielle Cormier earned the 2016-17 RMAC Women’s Freshman of the Year award. Freshman Kayla Wooten placed sixth in the women’s mile at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships as well.
The team began their outdoor season at the CSUPueblo Open, placing first, second, third and fifth in the high jump and first and second in the javelin.
Junior Molly Klotz earned first place in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.47.
Freshman Morgan Barone won in the high jump with a mark of 1.60 meters, and freshman Kelsey Calhoun with a throw of 38.64 meters.
Men’s Track and Field
The men’s track and field program opened their outdoor season on April 2 at the CSUPueblo Open after ranking in fourth place in the RMAC Championships Feb. 25, finishing their indoor season.
At the CSU-Pueblo Open, freshman Caleb Simons, freshman DeShon Elcock, junior LaChristopher Smith and freshman Tristan Hinkley earned first place in the event with a time of 41.66, just short of the provisional qualifying time of 41.00 seconds in the 4×100 meter relay.
Freshman DePree Kimber, who was awarded the 2016-17 RMAC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year, also won the long jump with a distance of 6.97 meters.
Women’s Lacrosse
In their first season, the lacrosse team has gone 4-6 overall and 0-5 in the RMAC conference so far.
The team is made mostly of freshmen. They are currently ranked ninth out of the 10 teams in the league, averaging 9.20 goals per game and 144 turnovers to their opponents’ 137.
The team lost 10-15 to Oklahoma Baptist on April 1. Led by Breanna Martinez in the first 30 minutes and sophomore Vanessa Wilson in the second half, the team had 17 shots, 21 caused turnovers and 22 ground balls in total throughout the game.
Men’s Baseball
As of April 7, the men’s baseball team had an overall record of 16-15 and a conference record of 11-9.
Splitting all of their series, the team has competed and won against high level competition such as California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and are currently ranked fourth in the RMAC.
The team won 14-10 against Colorado Mines on April 3. Sophomore Colin Cicere struck six batters in game one of the two-game event while junior Bryan Chapin hit two home runs. Junior outfielder Zach Hall made his second three-hit game of the season, going three-for-four.
Women’s Softball
The women’s softball team currently scored an overall record of 8-21 as of April 7.
With a team batting average of .273, the team has depended on their big hitters and team slugging percentage of .415 to score their 103 total runs.
Senior first baseman Lexi Belligan was named RMAC Softball Player of the Week on April 4 after hitting two home runs and recording seven runs against Colorado State-Pueblo.
Sophomore shortstop/third baseman Melissa Martinek leads the team offensively with 35 hits, a .393 hitting average and .730 slugging percentage.
