New senator position workshopped at latest SGA meeting

A senator of sports and athletics position was proposed at the senate meeting on Feb. 26.

Senator of Multicultural Affairs Ben Moses presented the bill and workshopped it with senators for future voting. This senator would replace one of the seven senator-at-large positions.

“This position will bridge the gap between the athletics department and SGA. Student athletes are very busy and occupied compared to traditional students … This bill would give the athletic department the representation it deserves and encourage collaboration between SGA and athletes,” Moses said.

The senator would be required to have monthly meetings with the Director and Associate Director of Athletics, collaborate with the Mountain Lion Strong program and serve on the Student Athlete Advisory committee or BAC.

The senator position would advocate for the 12 NCAA sports on campus. “It is still up for debate whether this senator should only represent student athletes, or recreational and scholarship clubs as well,” Moses said.

Moses said the position would be best fit for retired athletes that understand the needs and demands of student athletes.

This is the second senator position that has been proposed this semester. The first was the Senator of Disability and Accessibility that was proposed at the Feb. 6 SGA meeting. Neither position has been voted on by the senate yet.
