The UCCS women’s basketball team overpowered the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls, 77-65, on Jan. 23. With this victory and their win against Fort Lewis on Saturday, Jan. 25, their RMAC record now stands at 6-4 with 10 games left in the RMAC season.
The game started slow for the Mountain Lions. In the first quarter, the Mountain Lions allowed the Cowgirls to get up to an 8-point lead, 10-2. At the halfway point of the first quarter, the Mountain Lions gained momentum and took the lead, 11-10, and never looked back. The first quarter ended with UCCS leading, 23-17. They maintained a few points lead in the second and built it up to a double-digit lead late in the third quarter that they maintained in the fourth. At the final buzzer, UCCS was ahead by 12 points, 77-65.
Leading the charge for the Mountain Lions was forward Maison White with 23 points scored and 14 rebounds. White was named the RMAC Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week for her performance against the Cowgirls and the Fort Lewis Skyhawks.
Guard Amyah Moore Allen was another heavy hitter for the Mountain Lions. Moore Allen scored 19 points and made nine out of ten free throws.
The Mountain Lions play next against the Western Colorado Mountaineers on Jan. 30 at home.
