The essentials: find groceries, gas, other in Colorado Springs

Moving to a new place can be quite the transition.

    Where can you get a bite to eat? What if you need a doctor? What if something goes wrong with your car?

   Whether or not you’re brand new to Colorado Springs, or experiencing the areas close to UCCS for the first time as a commuter, here’s where to find the essentials.

 

Doctor’s Office

UCCS Recreation Center

Where: Near Alpine Village

Open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday

The UCCS Gallogly Recreation and Wellness Center offers student the ability to meet with physicians, family nurse practitioners, medical assistants, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, dietitians and a wellness promotion coordinator. Students can receive physicals, vaccines, therapeutic treatment and more for a price of $15 per appointment. Extras, like vaccines and prescriptions, may cost more.

 

DMV

Colorado Springs DMV

Where: 2447 N. Union Blvd.

7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday

Visit the DMV in order to renew your driver’s license, register a new car, submit a change of address, get a copy of your driver record or renew your car registration. Before you head to the DMV, you can make appointments online to save some of your time (and sanity), complete a service (filing an accident report or becoming an organ donor) at home or visit websites like DMV.org that can tell you whether or you really need to go the DMV.

 

Public Transportation

Mountain Metropolitan Transit Bus (MMT)

Where: Anywhere the MMT routes go. For route information and maps visit coloradosprings.gov or transit.google.com.

The MMT College Pass Program is offered to all UCCS students and is free of cost for all bus stops when they swipe their LionOne Card or Ent LionOne Card. Taking the MMT offers students free, convenient transportation, without a student ID the cost for monthly, unlimited pass = $65; so for 10 months, $650 and a single pass is $5.

 

Grocery Store

Trader Joe’s

Where: 5342 N. Nevada Ave.

8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily

Trader Joe’s is a grocery food chain that offers students a variety of products (both old favorites and exciting new ones) for good prices. Stop by and pick up a premade meal, groceries for the week or a few snacks for a road trip.

 

Auto Repair Shop

Honest Accurate Auto Service

Where: 426 Nevada Mesa View

Honest Accurate Auto Service is one of the top-rated auto repair shops in Colorado Springs and offers a variety of services, ranging from oils changes to tire rotations, for all makes and models of cars. Before you visit, call 598-6306 or visit honestaccurateauto.com to make an appointment.  

 

Police Department

Department of Public Safety

Where: Gateway Hall (next to Gateway Garage, across from Columbine Hall)

The UCCS Police Department and Public Safety provide UCCS students and staff with constant protection and a feeling of security. If you don’t have time head to the Public Safety Department, call them at 255-3111 or hit the button on the emergency panels around campus. If you do not feel comfortable reporting to the department, you can use the university’s online anonymous reporting option.

CSPD

The closest CSPD is 4.9 miles away on 705 S Nevada Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80903

The CSPD branch will be more helpful for protection off campus, since there isn’t much public safety can do for off campus crime. They can be reached at 719-444-7000.

                 

Coffee Shop

7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and closed on Sunday

Visit the Kairos Coffee House just off of I-25 and Garden of the Gods Road to order coffee, tea, a snack or breakfast to get energized and ready for the day or a late night study session. Bring a couple of friends and hang out in the cozy environment, hole-up with your favorite book or bring your laptop and textbooks to get homework done.

 

Gas Station

Where: 312 Mount View Lane

Open 24 hours daily

Fill up your gas tank and grab a quick snack if you’re hungry.

 

Big-Box Store

Target

5240 N. Academy Blvd., Colorado Springs

8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday; 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday

Head into Target and pick your essentials for the week, whether that’s a lint roller, roll of paper towels, a white shirt for tie-dye or a poster board for a project. This Target also offers a small selection of grocery items.
