Instead of taking a study break this week, maybe you should consider actually finishing some homework. Theaters have officially entered dry season, and the only film I saw that interested me was singer-songwriter Anderson .Paak’s directorial debut: “K-Pops!” That being said, nothing really popped out of this movie that was worth the cost of the ticket.
A washed-up musician joins a K-Pop television competition as a background drummer. Coincidentally, his long-lost son is on the show trying to win it all. BJ (Anderson .Paak) has to make the decision to follow his dream of becoming a great musician or stay and be a father to his son.
The genre is split down the middle in this dramedy with the comedy only hitting about half the time, and the drama feeling formulaic. Because of an intensely corny introduction, the momentum of the film becomes unbalanced.
The more I watched, little by little the film got more on beat. However, sprinkled throughout the film were those cookie-cutter moments that made me feel like I was watching a movie I’d seen a million times before.
I have to give credit where it’s due though, because .Paak did a decent job for his first movie. Although there was nothing significant about the film, it looked all right, had some funny moments and had an interesting enough storyline.
There were some good pop culture references that were interesting. I wasn’t expecting to see the famous streamer IShowSpeed, Saweetie or Jaden Smith in there, but they were fun cameos.
At the end of the day, you could find a ton of comedy/dramas on streaming services instead, or you could just finish your assignment; it’s due tonight!
K-Pops! Released to theaters Feb 27th, 2026. Picture by Prime Video.
