For the fourth straight year, UCCS will host the fourth annual USATri60 indoor triathlon at the Gallogly Recreation and Wellness Center on Saturday, Nov. 9.

“The USATri60 is open to general public, the UCCS community and members of campus recreation,” said Brooke Freudenhammer, program coordinator for aquatics and special events, in an email. “UCCS Campus Recreation is the first university in the nation to host the USATri60 program as a sanctioned USAT (USA Triathlon) event in partnership with USA Triathlon.”

The triathlon consists of biking, swimming and a treadmill run with check-in starting at 6:45 a.m. There are 16 waves, with the first wave starting right at 8 a.m. The final wave begins at 11:45 a.m. and ends at 1:05 p.m. Each wave will start 15 minutes after the previous wave.

Freudenhammer said that this event will provide an opportunity for beginners and experts alike to participate in a safe, fun and supportive environment. The triathlon begins with a 10 minute swim, followed by a 30 minute stationary bike ride and then finishes with a 20 minute run on a treadmill.

“No matter your skill level, you can participate without fear of falling behind because you’ll be alongside your friends the whole time,” said Freudenhammer. Participants must be 16 years or older to participate in the triathlon.

Participants can pick up their packets on Friday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. or 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. at the Gallogly Recreation and Wellness Center. Participants can also pick up their packet the day of the race at check-in.

“This will be campus recreation’s third year partnering with USA Triathlon for this event,” said Freudenhammer. “We have experienced increased participation each year, and more students are gaining interest in this triathlon due to the inclusive environment welcoming all skill and ability levels.”

“I thoroughly enjoy hosting the USATri60 event,” said Freudenhammer. “It is one of the few special events we offer that is open to the general public and I enjoy seeing the community members and students become involved in our recreation programs on campus. Over half of the participants are competing for the first time, so the staff members and volunteers enjoy cheering them on and create a fun and supportive environment no matter the skill level of the participant.”

Registration is available online at https://www.uccs.edu/recwellness/campus-rec/special-events/indoor-triathlon and participants can register up until the day of the triathlon. Registration fees for students and members of campus recreation are $35 per participant while UCCS community participants are $40 and general public participants are $45.

The registration fee includes a USA Triathlon swim cap, drawstring backpack, T-shirt, goggles and a medal for finishing the triathlon. Participants will be required to provide their own towel and swimsuit, as well as biking and running shoes. These materials are all provided by USA Triathlon.
