UCCS Men’s Golf finishes two-day tournament in 13th place

     Despite registering the fifth most birdies in the 19-team tournament, the UCCS men’s golf team ended Farmers Insurance Sam Proal West/South Central Regional Preview in 13th place. The two-day event, which included 19 teams, took place in Pueblo from Oct. 4-5.. 

     The team took 13th place after leading the meet in Par 5 scoring with a 10-under par at the Pueblo Country Club.  

     Redshirt sophomore Brandon Bervig and redshirt senior Ignacio De La Vega ended the first round with combined season low scores, shooting an even-par 71 with five birdies respectively as they tied for 28th for the day.  

     Freshman Rio Newcombe finished two-over par 73 on Oct. 4 after posting four birdies, including one that occurred during a three-hole stretch where he birdied holes No. 5-7 to help UCCS tie for the sixth most birdies on day one.  

     Sophomore Brady Haake and redshirt junior Barrett Jones respectively posted a pair of 75s to head into Tuesday’s final rounds as Haake shot one under-par on Par 5s with Jones notching even-par.  

     Bervig, Le Vega and Newcombe were all tied for the third best score on Par 5s with a three-under par.  

     Oklahoma Christian University led the tournament on the first day with a 10-under 274.  

     Haake improved on day two by shooting four strokes better and ending with an even-par 71, finishing 146 on the tournament: 75 and 71 respectively. He also notched five-total birdies including, back-to-back shots on holes No. 17 and No. 18.  

     Haake and Newcombe tied for the best par 3 scoring for UCCS with a one-under par and 2.90 average.  

     La Vega went into day two with another five birdies, ending with 10 total for the tournament. He also finished with a one-over par 72 and was the top UCCS individual at the tournament being tied for 27th place.  

     Jones notched six birdies total for the tournament and ended with a 150; two of his birdies occurred on the first three holes.  

     Oklahoma Christian University won the tournament.  

     UCCS Men’s Golf will finish their fall season with the two-day Otter Invitational, hosted by California State University Monterey Bay, on Monday, Oct. 18 and Tuesday, Oct. 19 at Bayonet Golf Course.
